Piers Morgan was given a ‘blunt ultimatum’ by a lawyer for Jay-Z and Beyoncé, who took action against the serious allegations against the power couple on the journalist’s programme.
On his YouTube series, Uncensored, Morgan, 59, interviewed 47-year-old American singer Jaguar Wright, who made false claims against the couple.
While discussing Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs’ arrest, she said: ‘For four years I’ve been screaming not just Diddy, but Diddy and Jay-Z are monsters.’ In her sensational allegations, Wright also claimed Jay-Z was ‘worse than Diddy.’
Beyonce and Jay-Z’s lawyer Alex Spiro has made another unprecedented move of speaking to TMZ about why they decided to take action against Morgan.
Spiro said on Wednesday: ‘There’s rumors and then there’s nonsense and this is one step further. This is a pointed and formal accusation of something. I felt they needed to be responded to.
‘I think somebody reported it was a cease and desist. It was quite bluntly an ultimatum which is, remove that false accusation that’s demonstrably false or a court’s going to order you to.’
Spiro slammed the exploitation of Wright, who has been extremely vocal against Diddy for many years and regularly takes part in YouTube interviews, however, her appearance on Morgan’s Uncensored was her most high-profile interview yet.
The attorney said: ‘By doing that they not only caused harm here but they are also droning out the voices of real victims and by doing that to get clicks, it didn’t just harm the Carters. What he did effectively was drone out the voices of actual victims in an ongoing case in an ongoing investigation and that was too much for me.’
Many have wondered why Beyonce, 43, and Jay-Z, 54, have not publicly spoken out themselves despite being subjected to serious allegations in recent weeks.
However, Spiro explained: ‘As to the Carters, I can tell you that when they put their foot down on something as they did here, they are sending a message.
‘And if they can’t stand up and make sure right from wrong then who can? I have always believed that the truth will come out in courtrooms and I’m sure the truth will come out here.’
Combs, 54, has been hit withmultiple lawsuitsin recent months, for various sex crimes over the years, which he was arrested and charged for in September.
During the Uncensored conversation, Wright later alleged Jay-Z and Beyoncé had hundreds of victims.
The legal team for Jay-Z and Beyoncé contacted Morgan, which led to him calling the comments ‘totally false’ and issuing a direct apology.
‘Jaguar Wright made several serious allegations about Jay-Z and Beyoncé during their interview. As I said in the moment, they were not present to respond or defend themselves,’ he began.
‘Now they have. Their lawyers contacted us to say those claims were totally false, and have no basis in fact.’
Morgan then shared that they had edited the interview to remove the allegations.
Who is Jaguar Wright?
Jaguar Wright, 47, is an American singer and songwriter best known for R&B and neo-soul. She was born in New York but moved to Philadelphia when she was around 12 years old.
The musician rose to fame after performing with hip hop group The Roots in 1998 before appearing as a backup singer for Jay-Z on MTV’s Unplugged in 2001. Wright was also featured in a Coca-Cola advert for the brand’s Nu-Soul campaign.
Wright has released five studio albums including her 2002 debut Denials Delusions and Decisions, followed by Divorcing Neo 2 Marry Soul in 2005.
‘We’ve therefore complied with the legal request to cut them from the original interview.
‘Editing interviews is not something we do lightly on a show called Uncensored,’ Morgan continued.
Morgan then compared the situation to a fire before concluding with his apology.
‘But like the proverbial cries of fire in a crowded theatre, there are legal limits on us too. We apologise to Jay-Z and Beyoncé,’ he stated.
A now-edited version of the interview is available to watch on Piers Morgan’s Uncensored YouTube channel.
Morgan began Uncensored, which is described as ‘the global arena for fearless debate, bold opinions and major interviews’ in 2022.
